Derived Classes and Base Classes
Derived Classes and Base Classes Mario Padilla IT/218 September 2, 2011 University of Phoenix/Axia College Derived Classes and Base Classes Considering that the ostrich is a flightless bird, it is reasonable to derive a class CHawk from CBird, but not a COstrich. This is mainly because the function fly () sets an altitude of 100 and, as everyone knows, the ostrich cannot fly. If we had to derive COstrich from CBird probably need to provide a function fly () to return 0, and this could break existing code, which sets the altitude to 100. This could be a derivation of a class avian; class CAvian { protected: int wingSpan; nt eggSize; }; class CFlyingBird : public CAvian { protected: int airSpeed; int altitude; public: virtual void fly() { altitude = 100; } }; class CFlightlessBird : public CAvian { // Arguments involving flightless birds }; class CHawk: public CFlyingBird { }; class COstrich : public CFlightlessBird { }; One of the main properties of the classes is inheritance. This pr operty allows us to create new classes from existing classes, retaining the properties of the original class and adding new ones. Each new class obtained through inheritance is known as derived class, and classes from which it derives are called base classes. In addition, each derived class can be used as a base class for a new derived class. And each derived class can be one or more base classes. In the latter case are referred to bypass manifold. This allows us to create a class hierarchy as complex as necessary. Well, but what are the advantages derived classes? Actually, that's the principle of object oriented programming. This property allows us to encapsulate different parts of any real or imaginary object, and links to objects made of the same basic type, will inherit all its features.

Computer System Scenarios
Computer System Scenarios Free Online Research Papers Scenario 1 Sarahââ¬â¢s Flower Designs is a fledgling, home-based business in Madison, Wisconsin, consisting of three employees. Sarah, the owner, handles all of the floral arrangements. Her assistant, Mark, handles the purchasing of flowers, related materials, and takes telephone and walk-in orders from customers. Mark also keeps the financial and client records in order. Kim is the delivery driver and makes local deliveries to homes and businesses. Sarahââ¬â¢s Flower Designs is looking to upgrade its computer system (an older model PC) to help keep up with the growing demand of their customers. They would like to house their client information and order histories on their new system, as well as bill their customers electronically. They also want Kim to have a way to keep track of customer addresses and specific delivery instructions while she is on the road. What IT recommendations would you make for Sarahââ¬â¢s Flower Designs? For Sarahââ¬â¢s Flower Designââ¬â¢s, I would suggest that Kim use a handheld computer. This will allow Kim to keep track of cuts the customerââ¬â¢s addresses and specific delivery instructions while shes on the road. A handheld computer weighs much less than a notebook computer and can be easily used in the delivery van or truck. The use of a handheld will also help to avoid delivery errors. I would also suggest that the business purchase a desktop computer for Mark to handle the purchasing of flowers, related materials, and to keep track of financial and client records. A desktop computer will also allow them to house their client information and order histories without having to worry about high costs. Mark can also type up walk in orders without having to worry about losing paper invoices. A desktop computer will assist in keeping with Sarahââ¬â¢s Flower Designs completely organized; and as the business grows they will be able to upgrade their system. Scenario 2 SBI Corporation is a financial consulting organization based out of Dallas, Texas with four satellite offices located throughout the southwestern United States. The company has 300 full-time employees, 20 of whom travel to various office locations 2 to 4 days a week. These 20 employees do not have access to email and other company programs when they are traveling. SBI Corporation wants to improve their company Web site to provide its clients with access to their portfolio information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The company also wants to supply technology equipment to employees who travel on a regular basis, in order to keep them in the loop. What IT recommendations would you make for SBI Corporation? For the SBI Corporation, I would suggest that the traveling employees be equipped with laptops. This will allow the traveling employees to be kept in the loop. They will also have easy access to e-mails and other company programs. The laptop desk portable and can be taken on too buses, trains, and planes. The traveling employees will just have to make sure they have plenty of battery power, and a NIC card. To help improve SBI Corporationââ¬â¢s website, I would suggest the use of mini computers so that its clients can have access to their portfolio information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A mini computer can be highly reliable and they can allow SBI Corporation to easily expand its Web capacity for growth. If the corporation grows even more (with millions of clients), I would suggest mainframe computers. It will allow them to store much more information, and can even lead to productivity increases. Scenario 3 The Helping Hands League is a nonprofit organization out of Orlando, Florida that offers assistance to elderly and handicapped individuals. Currently, the league has 35 volunteers who are assigned to help different people in the community with errands, reading, cooking, and household chores. The Helping Hands League does not have a lot of money to spend on technology. The league wants to keep records on each client and volunteer for tax purposes and have the ability to create schedules for volunteers to ensure the needs of each client are being met. What IT recommendations would you make for the Helping Hands League? A desktop computer is a cost effective way for The Helping Hands League to get what they want. A desktop computer can hold the information that will tell each volunteer which errands they are to do for the day. The league will be able to keep records on each client, which will be readily available for tax purposes. A printer should also be used, so that volunteers can print out their scheduled errands for the day. A desktop computer will also let The Helping Hands League create schedules for the volunteers that will ensure the clients are being treated right, and getting what they need. Desktop computers have good processing power and contain enough storage to support standard applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, and simple database process aimed that will allow the leagueââ¬â¢s needs to be met. The Helping Hands League just needs some general computing and more organization, and a desktop computer will help them obtain that. Scenario 4 John is an up-and-coming jazz singer and songwriter. He has regular gigs performing his original music at a neighborhood wine bar and a local Italian restaurant in his hometown of Santa Barbara, California. John is frequently asked by many of the wine bar and restaurant patrons if he has a CD recording of his songs for sale. John has not been signed to a record label as of yet, but he has been thinking about recording an album independently and selling it online and at his shows. He would like to record and produce the album on his own, at his house. John would also like to keep track of his personal and professional finances, listen to the audition recordings of session musicians interested in playing with him on his album, and have access to the Internet. What IT recommendations would you make for John? John should get a desktop computer. With standard office software he will be able to keep track of his personal and professional finances. He can actually record and produce his own album on a desktop computer as well. He will definitely need a good quality microphone, speaker setup, sound card, and other multimedia equipment and software to produce his own album. There are even many computer software programs that will allow him to design his own CD cover, as well. This will do until he will be able to sign onto a record label. He can get Internet access from providers in his area; this will allow him to listen to auditions emailed to him in mp3, wav, or mid files. There are job websites where John could look at the resumes of musicians, too. It might even be a good idea for John to get his own domain online to advertise his music even more. There are even many computer software programs that will allow him to design his own CD cover, as well. Tituba, the crucible essays
Tituba, the crucible essays Tituba was a native Caribbean slave that Reverend Samuel Parris had brought back with him from one of his crusades. Her personality was hospitable, and she would often sing songs in her native tong, which later would prove to be nothing more than ammo in the deliberations. So far, Titubas involvement in the notorious Salem witch trials is about to become more prevailing in the novel The crucible. Outside of the book I am aware that she was the first person in the village to confess to using witch craft but was forced by reasons not of her own, to confess. It all started with the Reverends daughter Betty and her cousin Abby. Betty began to have symptoms of hallucinations and unfamiliar outburst. In the time of the witch trials all things that might have been considered to be misfortune were viewed as being a direct punishment from God for what ever reason. So having a sick child must have been because of a sin committed by a member of the family, or someone else was bewitching her. I n the book however, Tituba was close to the children and was disheveled by the thought that anyone would believe she ment to hurt them, but never the less the blame was placed upon her and I was on her own accored she chose to save herself and confess, true or not. But what is surprising about this is Tituba knew that they would want to blame her for this, and also knew that there was nothing for her to do about it. What I believe Tituba wanted at this particular time was a chance. For many reasons she might have wanted a chance, a chance to show that she was really innocent qnd not a witch, a chance to find out what was really happening to the girls and lastly a chance to live out the rest of her life, not as a potential witch. ...

The Honorable Life of A Lone Warrior â⬠English Essay
The Honorable Life of A Lone Warrior ââ¬â English Essay Free Online Research Papers The Honorable Life of A Lone Warrior English Essay A city burning as an army of invaders waits at the gate. A lone Warrior stand on top of a hill ready to die a nameless death defending his homeland. A woman works two jobs too support her children, yet still somehow makes it to every parent teacher association meeting. An innocent man sits on death row as his lawyer fights for years to prove his innocence. Another man, guilty of the murder he was charged with, is released from prison. His one wish is to somehow help the family of that he has hurt so badly. A child shoplifts a candy bar, but as they are walking out, they turn around, confess to thier crime, return the candy bar, and gives the shop-keeper the money that they would have paid for the candy-bar. A vagabond stumbles accross a dying man, too late to save him, but just in time to hear the mans dying wish. He pleads with the vagabond to take his wedding ring to his life, and inform her of his fate. The vagabond travels for years in his search before finally finding the mans wife. After the vagabond delievers the news, he is offered any reward he chooices in return for his service. The vagabond ask for nothing and quietly slips away into the night. A young man, after fac ing years of abuse at the hands of his own alcholic father is about to become a father himself. As he looks into his childs eyes for the first time he makes promise to himself that he will never visit any harm onto his child. Today we have many many stories like the ones above. Each one tries to teach a the same lesson. How to be honorable. But have we in our time given up our honor. Has it just become term we use to describe something. What is honor? What does it mean to be honorable? According The American Heritage dictionary it means Possessing integrity. What then would be integrity? An example of what integrity is not is given in Stephen L. Carters essay, The Insufficency of Honesty In that eassy Carter writes, Consider an example. A man who has been married fifty years confesses to his wife on his deathbed that he was unfaithful thirty-five years earlier. The dishonesty was killing his spirit, he says. Now he has cleared his conscience and is able to die in peace.(322) Some mind say at least he was honest. That would be a mistake in thinking. The only way for him to have salvaged any form of integrity and honor having broken his marriage vow would have been for him to have confesse d thirty-five years prior and face the consequence of his actions. As Carter also writes, Besides, even though the husband has been honest in a sense, he has now twice been unfaithful to his wife: once thirty-five years ago, when he had his affair, and again when, nearing death he decided that his own peace of mind was more important then hers.(323) So there is an example of what integrity is not. The best example of integrity would be the story of the shoplifting child at the beginning of this essay. The child did something wrong, realized it, and immediately returned to face the consequences ofthier actions. So now there is a loose idea of what integrity is. Now lets return to the original question. What is honor? The many tellings of the legends of King Arthur have always been an example of honor. Arthur and his knights of the round table. But which version shows what honor actually is. The way the story is told in the movie Excalibur tells the story of a man simply trying to bring peace to his people, beset on all sides by obsticles and betrayels. The more recent movie King Arthur shows a very differant Arthur. In that telling Arthur is a roman general charged with defending Romes northern outpost of Britain. His knights are conscripts from Sarmatia, a land conquered by the romans many years before the events of Arthurs life. Despite that, they are actually his closets friends. His only wish is for them, and everyone else to live free lives. A belief he thinks is shared by everyone back in rome. During the course of the movie he discovers that the bright and shiny version of Rome he has been holding onto in his heart is untrue. Rome at this point has declined to near collapse. Me n are enslaved, corruption is rampent, and everything he believes in is thrown into question. This Arthurs delimia is his belief that high ideals are useless unless they serve a higher purpose. His inital higher purpose is Rome, but when that dream is shattered he slowly realizes that the higher purpose does not have to be represented by a place. It is by the deeds you you do in order to better those around. From all of this we are still left wondering how honor fits into our soceity today. Years ago people held honor in much higher regard. Some were even willing to fight to the death at the slightest hint of someone dishonoring them. At the end of World War 2 thousands of Japanese citizens commited suicide in order to cleanse themselves of the stain to thier honor from thier government surrendering to the allies. Today honor is something few people strive for. It is not something you can define easily. It is a collection of ideals, virtues, and beliefs that one must constantly try to live up too. An honorable life may not be an easy life, but it is a rewarding life. Biblography The Writers Presence: A Pool of readings 4th Ed. A Guide to Composite Materials in Boats
A Guide to Composite Materials in Boats Composite materials are broadly defined as those in which a binder is reinforced with a strengthening material. In modern terms, the binder is usually a resin, and the reinforcing material consists of glass strands (fiberglass), carbon fibers or aramid fibers. However, there are other composites too, such as ferrocement and wood resins, which are still used in boatbuilding. Composites offer the advantages of a higher strength-to-weight ratio than traditional wood or steel methods, and they require lower skill levels to produce an acceptable hull finish on a semi-industrial scale. History of Composites in Boats Ferrocement Probably the earliest use of composites for boats was ferrocement. This material was extensively used in the first half of the twentieth century for building low-cost, low-tech barges. Later in the century, it became popular not only for one-off home projects but also for production boatbuilders. A steel frame made of reinforcing rod (known as an armature) forms the hull shape and is covered with chicken wire. It is then plastered with cement and cured. Although a cheap and simple composite, armature corrosion is a common problem in the chemically aggressive marine environment. There are still many thousands of ferro boats in use today, however ââ¬â the material has enabled many people to realize their dreams. GRP During the Second World War, just after polyester resins were developed, glass fibers became available following the accidental discovery of a production process using blown air on a stream of molten glass. Soon, glass-reinforced plastic became mainstream and GRP boats started to become available in the early 1950s. Wood/Adhesive Composites Wartime pressures also led to the development of cold-molded and hot-molded boatbuilding techniques. These approaches entailed laying thin veneers of wood over a frame and saturating each layer with a glue. High-performance urea-based adhesives developed for aircraft manufacturers were widely used for the new technique of molding boat hulls ââ¬â typically for PT boats. Some adhesives required baking in an oven to cure and hot-molded hulls were developed, though there were size limitations governed by access to industrial ovens. Modern Composites in Boats Since the 1950s, polyester and vinylester resins have improved steadily and GRP has become the most prevalent composite used in boatbuilding. It is used in shipbuilding too, typically for minesweepers that need non-magnetic hulls. Osmotic problems from which early-generation boats suffered are now a thing of the past with modern epoxy compounds. In the 21st century, volume GRP boat production follows a full industrial production process. Wood/epoxy molding techniques are still in use today, typically for rowing skiffs. Other wood/adhesive composites have evolved since the introduction of high-performance epoxy resins. Strip plankingà is one such popular technique for home boat construction: Strips of wood (typically cedar) are laid longitudinally over frames and coated with epoxy. This simple construction offers a cheap and strong build with a fair finish easily achievable by an amateur. At the leading edge of boat building, aramid fiber reinforcing strengthens key areas of sailboats, such as the bows and keel sections. Aramid fiber also provides improved shock absorption. Carbon fiber masts are increasingly common, as they offer major performance and vessel-stability benefits. Sailboats also use composites in their sail construction, with carbon-fiber or glass-fiber tape offering a flexible but dimensionally stable matrix to which synthetic sailcloth is laminated. Carbon fiber has other marine uses too ââ¬â for example for high-strength interior moldings and furniture on super-yachts. The Future of Composites in Boatbuilding The costs of carbon fiber fall as production volumes increaseà so the availability of sheet carbon fiber (and other profiles) is likely to become more prevalent in boatà production. Materials science and composite technology are advancing rapidly, and new composites include carbon nanotube and epoxy mixtures. Recently, a small naval vessel with a hull built using carbon nanotubes was delivered as a concept project. Lightness, strength, durability, and ease of production mean that composites will play an increasing part in boat construction. Despite all the new composites, Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are here to stay for very many years, though it will surely be in partnership with other exotic composites.

Communication - Essay Example One very important area of communication where I feel need for personal improvement is oral and public communication. Oral and public communication forms a major part of our lives as the communication that takes place, majority of them takes place in oral form. Thus, it is very important to focus on this part of communication as it can really make or change our lives. There are many examples in our daily lives that can be linked to this type of communication. For instance, relationship manager in a bank is responsible for approaching the customers and develop relationship with them through this type of communication. Similarly, a lecturer in a university transfers most of the data to its students by communicating orally. A politician a leader or a reformer addresses the public by communicating with them orally. However, what if a manager is not able to communicate with the customers effectively because of poor oral and public communication skills, a lecturer fails to make his student understand the topic, or a politician fails to draw attention of the mob towards what he has to say? In order to avoid this scenario, we must focus on certain aspects that can make us better at oral and public communication. Following things should be kept in mind for oral communication: A speaker should always use appropriate volume level. It should not be too low so people have difficulty in listening to you and it should not be too high. The volume should be adjusted according to the situation as for instance, when addressing a mob speaker must be loud and clear so that he can effectively transfer his message. Similarly, if we are talking to a person who is standing near us then we should talk with a polite tone. The main goal should be to ensure that everyone understands what we want to say without straining their ear or by irritating them by speaking too loudly. The speaker should be assertive in what he has to say. For

DISCUSSION QUESTION RESPONSE - Essay Example They learned how to be competent experts on the job and according to them, real life education based on actual work experience will always trump academic competency because academics cannot prepare you to think on your feet and avoid non-textbook pitfalls on the job. Simply put, academic competence is what is expected of you once you enter the workforce as a rank and file employee. As you gain work experience, you earn points towards on the job competence. Maybe, you will even come to realize that some or most of the theories taught in classes will have to be thrown out the door on the job because it does not apply to the actual work. Thus, there will be times when theoretical competency will make you look like you do not know your job. Therefore, professional competence could be best defined by knowing when you throw out what you learned in school in order to achieve a higher competency skill on the
